With the outset of the new Witcher series on Netflix, I figured that it would be the perfect time to discuss the series by focusing on some of its Polish themes. I will also quickly review options for getting started with the Witcher series.
Introduction to the Witcher
The Witcher is a fantasy series of short stories and novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski and chronicles the adventures of Geralt of Rivia in a place called the “Continent.” Geralt of Rivia is the main protagonist and witcher in the series, but other characters also take the forefront. A witcher is a mercenary who was specially trained as a child and possesses magical abilities and elixirs to slay monsters. The earliest story was published as a submission to a writing competition in Fantastyka, a monthly Polish fantasy magazine, and won third-place. The Witcher grew in popularity since then.
Afterward, the rest of the books were published, including The Last Wish (1993), Sword of Destiny (1992), Blood of Elves(1994), Time of Contempt (1995), Baptism of Fire (1996), The Tower of the Swallow (1997), The Lady of the Lake (1999), and Season of Storms (2017). This is also the recommended reading order.
Polish Folklore
Now that you have a basic understanding of the Witcher series, I can delve into its Polish themes. One of the more interesting themes in the Witcher, in my opinion, is the folklore. The series draws its inspiration from folklore by featuring various beasts and other supernatural creatures. Some of these creatures include the kikimora, striga, and the rusalka.
A kikimora is known as a female spirit that haunts houses and usually looks like a deformed person (Clark). The very first scene of the Witcher series on Netflix depicts a less-than-accurate kikimora fighting with Geralt.
A striga (strzyga) is a child who turns into a beast after its mother dies from giving birth and has massive claws and teeth used to devour the local inhabitants. “According to the Polish Folk Tale Dictionary, the striga “is a phantom, although there are messages confirming that sometimes the wraith and the striga were distinguished as two separate demonic beings (Clark).” My favorite scene involves Geralt fighting a striga in an attempt to convert it back to a child.
Last but not least, a rusalka (rusałka) is a female spirit that resides in or around water and comes out during the springtime to water the crops. It also draws unsuspecting victims into the water, much like the sirens in Greek mythology. The rusalka is said to have once been a woman who committed suicide, or who was drowned, in a body of water (“Rusalka”). A rusalka has yet to appear in the Netflix show, but it is mentioned in The Last Wish.
Location, Location, Location!
I recently discovered an article by Andrea Smith on Lonely Planet, a travel guidebook publisher, about some of the locations that are depicted throughout the Witcher.
One location is the Ogrodzieniec Castle, which is located north of Kraków in Podzamcze, Silesia. This gothic-style castle was built in the 14th century and has a long history of plundering and destruction. The scenes for the Battle of Sodden, which pitted the mages of the Brotherhood against the Nilfgaardian Army, were filmed at the castle (Smith).
Two locations from which the Witcher video games drew their inspiration are the Żuraw crane and Zalipie. The Żuraw crane is located in the port of Gdańsk and is the defining image of the city. The crane is seen in Novigrad in the games. Zalipie is famous for its peasant cottages on which the locals paint decorative designs. You can find Zalipie west of Olesno, Opole (Smith).
How To Get Started With The Witcher?
Now that you are armed with a basic understanding of the Witcher, you can dive into the series full-heartedly! I definitely recommend reading at least The Last Wish before watching the Netflix show, as it will give you more insight into the characters and the setting. I also hear that the video games are top-notch, so give them a try. Finally, stay tuned for the second season of The Witcher on Netflix. Filming has already begun!
Wraz z początkiem nowego serialu Wiedźmin na Netfliksie, pomyślałem, że będzie to idealny czas na omówienie serii, skupiając się na jej polskich wpływach. Szybko również opiszę, jak zabrać się do Wiedźmina.
Wprowadzenie do Wiedźmina
Wiedźmin to seria opowiadań fantasy autorstwa Andrzeja Sapkowskiego o dziejach wiedźmina Geralta z Rivii w miejscu, które nazywa się „Kontynent.” W serialu, głównym bohaterem jest wiedźmin Geralt z Rivii jednak inne postacie są równie ważne. Wiedźmin jest najemnikiem, który posiada magiczne zdolności i eliksiry. Jako dziecko został specjalnie przeszkolony do zabijania potworów.
Potem reszta książek została opublikowana, wliczając w to Ostatnie Życzenie (1993), Miecz Przeznaczenia (1992), Krew Elfów (1994), Czas Pogardy (1995), Chrzest Ognia (1996), Wieża Jaskółki (1997), Pani Jeziora (1999) i Sezon Burz (2017). To też jest rekomendowana kolejność czytania.
Polski Folklor
Mając podstawowe pojęcie o serialu Wiedźmina mogę zabłębić się w polskie tematy. Moim zdaniem jednym z najciekawszych wypływów w Wiedźminie to folklor. Serial czerpie inspirację z folkloru pokazując różne bestie i nadprzyrodzone stworzenia. Niektóre z nich to kikimora, strzyga i rusałka.
Kikimora jest duchem, który nawiedza domy i zwyczajnie wygląda na zdeformowaną osobę (Clark). Pierwsza scena serialu Wiedźmin przedstawia niezbyt dokładną walkę Geralta z Kikimorą.
Strzyga to dziecko, które zamienia się w bestię po śmierci matki w trakcie porodu. Ma ogromne szczypce i zęby, do pożerania okolicznych mieszkańców. „Według polskiego słownika folkloru strzyga jest fantomem, chociaż istnieją wiadomości potwierdzające, że czasami widma i strzygi były rozróżniane jako dwie odrębne istoty demoniczne (Clark)." Moją ulubioną sceną jest Geralt walczący ze strzygą, próbujący przekształcić ją z powrotem w dziecko.
Ostatnia, ale nie mniej ważna, rusałka jest duchem, który mieszka w wodzie lub blisko wody i pojawia się wiosną, żeby podlać uprawy. Wciąga również niczego niepodejrzewające ofiary do wody, podobnie jak syreny w mitologii greckiej. Mówi się, że rusałka jest kobietą, która popełniła samobójstwo lub utonęła (“Rusalka”). Rusałka nie pojawiała się w serialu Netfliksa, ale została wspomniana w Ostatnim Życzeniu.
Lokalizacja, Lokalizacja, Lokalizacja!
Niedawno, na Lonely Planet, który jest wydawnictwem przewodników podróży, odkryłem artykuł Andrei Smitha o lokalizacjach w Wiedźminie.
Jedną z lokalizacji jest Zamek Ogrodzieniec, który znajduje się na północ od Krakowa w Podzamczu na Śląsku. Ten gotycki zamek został zbudowany w XIV wieku i ma długą historię grabieży i zniszczenia. Sceny bitwy pod Sodden, w której magowie Bractwa walczyli z armią Nilfgaardu, zostały nakręcone na zamku (Smith).
Dwa miejsca, z których gry wideo Wiedźmin czerpały inspirację, to Żuraw i Zalipie. Żuraw znajduje się w gdańskim porcie i jest symbolem miasta. W grach Żuraw jest widoczny w Nowigradzie. Zalipie słynie z chłopskich domków, w których miejscowi malują ozdobne wzory. Zalipie można znaleźć na zachód od Olesna, Opole (Smith).
Jak zacząć z Wiedźminem?
Teraz, gdy jesteś uzbrojony w podstawową wiedzę o Wiedźminie, możesz zagłębić się w serię z całego serca! Zdecydowanie polecam przeczytanie przynajmniej Ostatniego Życzenia przed obejrzeniem serialu na Netfliksie, ponieważ da Ci to lepszy wgląd w postacie i całą oprawę. Słyszę też, że gry wideo są niesamowite, więc warto dać im szansę. Czekajcie na drugi sezonu Wiedźmina na Netfliksie. Zdjęcia już się rozpoczęły.
