One of the national symbols of Poland is the White Eagle. According to medieval folklore, the Polanie tribe originally adopted this symbol after Lech, the leader of the tribe at the time, saw a beautiful white eagle fly above him in a territory that would eventually become Poland. While in flight, the eagle appeared to have golden wings as the sun shined down upon it. Lech was so delighted by this image that he adopted the white eagle as his tribe’s emblem. Once the Polanie united other neighboring tribes under the rule of Mieszko I, the Piast Dynasty was created, and Lech’s emblem was adopted as the coat of arms. To this day, despite having been altered countless times throughout the centuries, Poland’s coat of arms reflects Lech’s eagle with an all-white body, golden talons, and a golden crown on its head.
Another important national symbol of Poland is the flag. The flag of Poland is horizontally bicolored with white on the top and red on the bottom. The white represents peace while the red represents blood shed for Polish independence. White and red have almost always been the national colors of Poland, but the first legal recognition of these colors by the Sejm was in 1831 after Poland proclaimed its independence from Russia. After the fall of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the mid-20th century, Poland reestablished the flag from 1831, which remains unchanged to this day.
Nowadays, Poles are immensely proud of their flag and coat of arms. The Republic of Poland has laws requiring all people to respect its national symbols and Poles even celebrate the historical significance of them during multiple holidays, namely Polish Flag Day on May 2nd, Constitution Day on May 3rd, and Independence Day on November 11th.
