The difficulty is more than suitable for beginners, as the stories start simple and slowly progress throughout the book. Although, I do recommend having basic knowledge of the Polish language before reading this book since there are no grammar explanations. In addition to the overall simplicity of the book’s language, the authors included a CD containing two voice recordings per chapter: one at a slow pace and another at a normal pace. Finally, the book is 132 pages, which ensures that the reader has enough material to learn from while also not being too overwhelming.
What I like most about the book is that it is both useful and easy-to-read. Oftentimes language-learning books like this one are far too outdated or formal for beginners, containing phrases and sentence structures that are no longer in use or that are unnatural in everyday conversations. This book, on the other hand, contains language with realistic sentence structures and word order. Also, the vocabulary is quite common in the real world, so beginners can gain practical knowledge and not have to learn words that they will most likely never see, nor use for that matter.
In the interest of being objective, I must point out the lack of grammar explanations. I know that the book is meant for beginners, but I still believe that grammar concepts should be incorporated into any learner’s curriculum from the start, because grammar pulls everything together and makes sure that sentences are comprehensible. In my opinion, every bit of grammar helps.
In summary, I believe that Learn Polish Through Stories is a great option for beginners who want to broaden their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the Polish language. The book offers almost all of what a beginner needs to be successful, including in-text definitions and practical language; however, it does not explain basic grammatical concepts. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone willing to learn such a complex language and I would give it a solid 9 out of 10. Przed każdym rozdziałem znajduje się zestaw słownictwa z tłumaczeniem. Można też znaleźć przydatne definicji na marginesach. Poziom zaawansowania jest bardziej niż odpowiedni dla początkujących, bo historie zaczynają się dość prosto i rozwijają się w trakcie czytania. Chociaż polecałbym zaznajomienie się z podstawami gramatyki języka polskiego, ponieważ książka ich nie wyjaśnia. Oprócz łatwości materiału autorzy dołączyli płytę zawierającą dwa nagrania co rozdział: jedno czytane wolnym i jedno normalnym tempem. Książka ma 132 strony, co zapewnia, że czytelnik ma wystarczającą ilość materiału do nauki, a jednocześnie nie jest zbyt przytłaczający.
Najbardziej lubię to, że książka jest i prosta, i przydatna. Bardzo często książki do nauki języków jako obcych są napisane za formalnie i przestarzale. Prezentują frazy i struktury zdań, które są nienaturalne lub wyszły z użycia. Z drugiej strony, książka zawiera materiał z realistycznymi strukturami zdań. Dodatkowo, użyte słownictwo jest bardzo powszechne w życiu codziennym, dlatego początkujący mogą przyswajać praktyczną wiedzę bez obawy, że nauczą się słów, których albo nigdy nie użyją albo z którymi nigdy się nie spotkają.
Żeby zachować obiektywność muszę wskazać, że książce brakuje wyjaśnień gramatycznych. Wiem, że ta książka jest dla początkujących, ale uważam, że trzeba włączyć gramatykę do programu nauczenia od początku, bo gramatyka łączy wszystko i sprawia, że zdania są zrozumiałe. Moim zdaniem każdy kawałek gramatyki wszystkim pomaga.
W skrócie, uważam, że Learn Polish Through Stories jest dobrą opcją dla początkujących, którzy chcą się nauczyć słownictwa i pogłębić znajomość języka polskiego.
